Mold Doesn't Hide
From Our Dogs
Certified K9 mold detection. We find it before you tear a wall open.
Watch Milo work
This is what an inspection actually looks like. Milo covers the room, finds the scent, and tells his handler exactly where it is — no guessing, no cutting into your walls to find out.
The people behind Milo
Milo works every job with Doug and Halen — no rotating techs, no strangers in your home. He earned that nose the hard way: an intensive 1,000-hour training and certification program in Clearwater, Florida under Bill Whitstine, the man who pioneered mold detection dog training.
Why Use a Mold Detection Dog?
A dog's nose contains up to 300 million scent receptors — compared to just 6 million in humans. Mold produces microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) as it grows, and our certified K9s are specifically trained to detect these compounds at concentrations far below what any instrument can measure.
This means mold hidden deep inside walls, under concrete slabs, or inside HVAC ductwork — places you can't see and instruments can't reach — is no match for a trained mold dog.
Finds what cameras and meters miss
Moisture meters and borescope cameras can only detect what's on the surface or in their direct line of sight. A mold dog detects the actual mold organism regardless of where it's hiding.
Non-invasive — no damage to your home
No holes drilled, no drywall cut open, no tiles removed. Our dogs walk through your home and alert exactly where mold is present — pinpointing the problem without the destruction.
Faster and more thorough
A trained K9 can systematically cover areas that would take a human inspector hours, ensuring no spot is missed — including tight spaces no person could access.
Completely safe for your K9 partner
Our dog never touches or inhales mold directly — they detect scent compounds from a safe distance. All K9s are on regular vet wellness programs and are closely monitored. The work is reward-based, so they love doing it.
Certified K9 detection for homes, businesses, and property transactions — finding mold where instruments cannot reach. Every inspection includes an air quality test and a written report of findings.
Residential
Full home sweeps — walls, bathrooms, furniture, mattresses, vehicles, and more.
Commercial
Offices, schools, and buildings — keep your occupants safe and compliant.
RVs & Motor Homes
Water intrusion and hidden mold in RVs, campers, and motor homes.
Pre- & Post-Remediation
Map the scope before demo, then confirm the mold is actually gone after.
Certified K9 Mold Detection
Our certified mold detection dog and handler team bring a level of accuracy no instrument alone can match. It's what makes True Scent Mold Dog Company different from every other inspector.
Detection accuracy vs. 70% for instruments alone

Our Inspection Services
We never perform remediation — our only job is finding the truth about mold in your property.
Residential Inspection
Our most common service. A certified K9 and inspector team conducts a comprehensive sweep of your home, focusing on the areas most likely to harbor hidden mold.
- Full K9 sweep of all rooms and common areas
- Bathroom, kitchen & laundry areas
- Furniture, mattresses & upholstery
- Exterior of the home
- Vehicles
- Air quality test
- Written report of findings
Commercial Inspection
Protect your employees, tenants, and customers. We inspect offices, schools, warehouses, retail spaces, and multi-family properties to identify hidden mold hazards.
- K9 sweep of all occupied and utility areas
- Server rooms, storage & mechanical spaces
- Recommendations for remediation contractors
- Air quality test
- Written report of findings
RV & Motor Home Inspection
RVs are built to be light, not dry. A single failed seal around a roof vent or window can feed mold behind the walls for seasons before anyone smells it — and there is no crawlspace to check.
- Full K9 sweep of the coach interior
- Slide-outs, cabinetry & storage bays
- Mattresses, upholstery & soft furnishings
- Under sinks, wet bath & plumbing runs
- Pre-purchase sweeps on used units
- Air quality test
- Written report of findings
Pre- & Post-Remediation Testing
Bring us in before the work starts and Milo maps exactly what needs treating — so you are not paying to tear out a wall that was fine. Bring us back after, and he tells you whether it worked. We have no financial interest in the answer either way, because we never do the remediation.
- Before: K9 sweep to define the scope of work
- Pinpoints affected areas so nothing gets missed — or over-torn
- Gives your contractor a clear target before demo
- After: K9 clearance sweep of treated areas
- Identifies any areas that need re-treatment
- 100% independent — we never do remediation
- Air quality test
- Written report of findings

About True Scent Mold Dog Company
We started this company because we believed there had to be a better way to find mold — one that was more accurate, less invasive, and completely honest with the customer.
Every inspection is run by the same small team — Doug, Halen, and their certified mold-detection dog, Milo. The people who search your home are the same ones who walk you through exactly what they found.
Doug Maxwell
A licensed Texas Mold Assessment Consultant and licensed Texas home inspector who knows where mold hides and how moisture gets in. He handles Milo, reads his alerts, and walks you through what they find.
Halen
Works Milo on inspections alongside Doug. Trained to read subtle changes in behavior and distinguish a trained alert from ordinary canine interest — the skill that separates a reliable inspection from a false positive.
Milo
Trained to alert to the compounds active mold gives off — scents no instrument catches. Finds hidden mold without tearing into walls.
Trained and certified by Bill Whitstine, Florida Canine Academy
Milo did not learn this at home. He was trained and certified by Bill Whitstine at the Florida Canine Academy in Clearwater, Florida — the person generally credited with building the first formal mold detection dog program in the country.
Whitstine has trained working dogs since 1989, starting in accelerant detection and expanding into narcotics, explosives, weapons, and termites. Mold came later, and by request: insurers were drowning in claims they could not locate the source of, and asked whether a dog could do what their instruments could not. He brought in a forensic chemist, an industrial hygienist, and a university researcher to find out. They could. The program he built from that work is the one nearly every credible mold dog in the United States comes out of, and he founded a dedicated arm of the academy to run it.
What that means for your inspection: Milo is trained on the odor signatures of the toxic mold families that actually matter in buildings, and taught to work past the everyday noise of a lived-in house — food, pets, cleaning products, people. His certification is not permanent. It has to be re-earned on a schedule, which is the point — a nose that is not maintained drifts.
A detection dog is only as good as the handler reading its alerts. That is why Milo only ever works with certified handlers who know him — Doug and Halen. No rotating techs, no strangers in your home.
Milo is certified on mold-specific scents and re-tested regularly to stay accurate.
Doug reads and confirms every alert, then shows you exactly where and what was found.

That is why we work hand in hand with wellness practitioners who specialize in mold-related illness. True Scent Mold Dog Company finds and documents the mold. Our wellness partner helps your body recover from it.
