Why Use a Mold Detection Dog?
A dog's nose contains up to 300 million scent receptors — compared to just 6 million in humans. Mold produces microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) as it grows, and our certified K9s are specifically trained to detect these compounds at concentrations far below what any instrument can measure.
This means mold hidden deep inside walls, under concrete slabs, or inside HVAC ductwork — places you can't see and instruments can't reach — is no match for a trained mold dog.
Finds what cameras and meters miss
Moisture meters and borescope cameras can only detect what's on the surface or in their direct line of sight. A mold dog detects the actual mold organism regardless of where it's hiding.
Non-invasive — no damage to your home
No holes drilled, no drywall cut open, no tiles removed. Our dogs walk through your home and alert exactly where mold is present — pinpointing the problem without the destruction.
Faster and more thorough
A trained K9 can systematically cover areas that would take a human inspector hours, ensuring no spot is missed — including tight spaces no person could access.
Completely safe for your K9 partner
Our dog never touches or inhales mold directly — they detect scent compounds from a safe distance. All K9s are on regular vet wellness programs and are closely monitored. The work is reward-based, so they love doing it.
Works best paired with air sampling
Our K9 pinpoints the location. Air sampling identifies the species and spore count. Together, you get the most complete picture of mold in your property — what, where, and how much.
Every inspection combines certified K9 detection and lab-analyzed air sampling — the most thorough mold inspection method available.

About True Scent Mold Dog Company
We started this company because we believed there had to be a better way to find mold — one that was more accurate, less invasive, and completely honest with the customer.
True Scent Mold Dog Company was founded in Silsbee, Texas — deep in East Texas, where high humidity and frequent storms make mold one of the biggest threats to homes and families in the region. We saw too many homeowners discovering mold too late, after it had spread behind walls and through HVAC systems, causing serious health problems and expensive damage.
We knew that certified mold detection dogs had a proven track record of finding mold that instruments and visual inspections simply miss. So we invested in training a certified K9 team and built a business around the most accurate inspection method available.
Our commitment is simple: find the truth about mold in your property, give you a clear and honest report, and let you make an informed decision — without any conflict of interest. We never do remediation, so our only goal is accuracy.
Every inspection is run by the same team — a certified handler, a professionally trained detection dog, and the trainer who built their partnership. The person who scans your home is the person who explains the results.
Doug Maxwell
Doug leads every inspection. With a background as a licensed Texas home inspector, he knows exactly where mold hides — behind walls, in HVAC systems, under flooring — and how buildings let moisture in. He and his detection dog work as one team on every job.
[Dog's Name]
[Dog's name] is a professionally trained detection dog who alerts to the microbial compounds active mold gives off — scents no instrument or visual check can catch. With a 95%+ accuracy rate, [he/she] pinpoints hidden mold fast, making inspections precise and far less invasive.
[Trainer's Name]
[Trainer's name] trained and certified our detection team using proven scent-detection methods, built the bond between handler and dog, and keeps their skills sharp with ongoing training — so the team stays reliable inspection after inspection.
A detection dog is only as good as the handler reading its alerts and the trainer keeping the team sharp. That is why all three stay together on every inspection — no rotating techs, no strangers in your home.
The dog is certified on mold-specific scents and re-tested regularly to stay accurate.
Doug reads and confirms every alert, then documents exactly where and what was found.
Lab-analyzed air or surface samples confirm findings — so you get proof, not guesses.
